Dr. Hina Raza, (Health Science, 2010), is currently working as a general pediatrician at CHU Ste-Justine Hospital in Montreal, where she specializes in child maltreatment pediatrics. As an assistant clinical professor, she plays a crucial role in shaping the next generation of pediatricians, combining her passion for medicine with a commitment to education.

Dr. Raza holds a doctorate in medicine and a master’s degree in public health from the Université de Montréal. Her research focuses on the health impacts faced by children who are victims of maltreatment. In 2023, she completed an academic Fellowship Program in Child Abuse Pediatrics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr. Raza has been pursuing advanced degrees for the last 13 years.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Raza states that: “It went by fast because I loved what I was doing. When you’re passionate about your work, it just feels natural.”

From a young age, Dr. Raza was driven to pursue a career in medicine due to her passion for exploring the human aspects of science. She chose Health Science at Cegep to lay the groundwork for her future.

Dr. Raza fondly recalls her time at Champlain, describing it as a warm and welcoming environment that fostered meaningful connections.

“I really loved my time at Champlain. The smaller setting allowed me to get to know everyone and it was easy to get involved in different activities.”

During her studies, she worked part-time in Student Services, was tutor at the Learning Center and participated in intramural sports, enhancing her college experience and building a strong sense of community.

At CHU Ste-Justine, the second-largest pediatric hospital in North America and a leading centre for research in pediatric medicine, Dr Raza works alongside a multidisciplinary team dedicated to addressing child maltreatment in addition to her role as a general pediatrician.

Dr. Raza’s role allows her not only to teach and train future pediatricians (CHU Sainte-Justine is also the place where more than 80% of Quebec pediatricians are trained) but also to engage in various research projects focused on improving patient care.

Her favourite aspects of the job are taking care of patients and their families and collaborating with other healthcare professionals.

Dr. Raza’s advice to current students and recent grads: “Make sure you’re pursuing something you genuinely love, not just what others expect of you. It’s your life—never hesitate to explore new paths and trust your instincts!”
