Last spring, a group of Champlain students organized an independent TedX event on campus. The event was filmed with support from the IT department and some of the speeches have now been uploaded to the TEDx official YouTube Channel.

You can now watch the speech given by Champlain graduate Dr. Samir Shaheen-Hussain on the topic of “Confronting Medical Colonialism in Canada.”

Dr. Shaheen-Hussain is an associate professor in the department of Pediatrics in the faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University.

He is the author of the award-winning book, Fighting for a Hand to Hold: Confronting Medical Colonialism against Indigenous Children in Canada.

The talk given by Georges Awaad, a Master’s student in Linguistics, is also available online.

He spoke about the necessity to preserve marginalized and endangered languages, emphasizing their value in the creation of culture and distinct identity.

With 25 languages under his belt, Awaad is interested in Indigenous language revitalization projects. Find a link to his talk “To Love Languages is to Love Humanity” here.

You can also watch the talk given by Champlain faculty member Quinn-Issla Rochester entitled “A Teacher’s View on Self-Determination.”

Rochester, who teaches psychology, considers that learning and accomplishments in the classroom are meaningful when both teacher and student learn from each other but more importantly through the development of self-determination.

In her talk, Rochester describes how she came to teaching through a series of events that required self-determination to bring her academic journey to fruition.

In her continued motivation to develop, she speaks about how she recently became a yoga instructor, practices meditation and continues to teach and learn with her students.
