The Green Team, a student initiative at Champlain College Saint-Lambert dedicated to environmental issues, took home a provincial Forces Avenir award at the collegiate gala held in Quebec City on Oct. 2.

The Green Team won in the Environment category and 2024 graduate Clara Montreuil attended the ceremony to speak about the group’s contributions.

Beginning with the revitalization of the college’s old community garden, the Green Team has turned the site into a welcoming green space, blooming with vegetables and herbs.

The group has succeeded in doubling the space dedicated to cultivation on campus and provided free produce grown in the garden to students. The Green Team offers workshops on planting seedlings, growing different vegetable plants, the life cycle of plants and the indispensable role of insects.

The group also received funding from the World Wildlife Fund and Quebec’s Environment Ministry to create a permaculture garden in front of the College.

Montreuil participated in livestreamed selection interviews with a panel of judges last spring alongside Daniel Hernandez Villavicencio, who was invited as a semifinalist representing the Queer History Workshops.

The Queer History Workshops, nominated in the category of Society, Communication and Education, involved monthly presentations organized by students to provide information and context sexuality, gender identity and intersectional issues.

Last April, Champlain awarded its local Forces Avenir recipients during a ceremony held at the College.
